Let's talk About YouTube


YouTube is a video-sharing website on which users can upload, share and view videos. It is the third most visited website according to Alexa, after Google and Facebook. It was created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. Hurley studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Chen and Karim both studied computer science at the University of Illinois. The idea of creating YouTube have a lot of varying speculations. One which is very famous is that Hurley and Chen had experienced difficulty sharing videos shot at a dinner party at Chen's San Francisco apartment due to email attachments limitations. That's when the idea about YouTube originally sparked. Another speculation is that YouTube started out as a dating site dubbed “Tune In Hook Up”. The domain name YouTube.com was activated on February 14, 2005. After the launch the founders had to struggle for finances. In November 2005, however, a lot of people and companies have invested large sums of money to keep YouTube running. In its initial operation, the site was flooded by an overwhelming number of videos uploaded on a daily basis. On November 9, 2006 YouTube was purchased by Google for US$1.65 billion in stock.


Now YouTube has become so huge that its statistical data is overpowering. Thirty five hours of video footage is uploaded to the site every minute. And that is ever increasing. More video is uploaded every sixty days than the three major US television networks produced in 60 years. Each week, YouTube receives the equivalent of 115,000 full-length feature films in uploads. You will spend 1, 700 years to watch all the videos on YouTube. YouTube has 490 million different users monthly and it is estimated that the site gets a 92 billion views each month. It is localized in 25 countries spanning forty three languages. Every day, over 2 billion videos are viewed, with lady Gaga's Bad Romance video hailed as the most watched.

Internet sites such as YouTube has been a part of our society. It has become part of our lives. Through YouTube, a lot of memories are preserved and shared. Some famous celebrities have even become instant stars because of this video sharing site. Indeed, it has made a difference to the society and to our lives as individuals.
